This total Message count also includes your incoming (unread) Direct messages which are secure messages from other providers, a requirement for MIPS. You can access these right from Messages and if you click on the arrow for each provider, it will collapse them, so you can see your heading. Clicking on each message will “mark the viewed” and make them come out of your count.
